In this episode of Satansplain: A look at Satanism and humanism, their similarities and more importantly their differences. Though to do that, we’ll have to first unpack some bigger topics, such as what makes a religion a religion in the first place. Also, some listener mail on the Satanist’s choice to use or reject social media, and also a word on Satanic baptisms.

Magister Bill M. here with Satansplain. I have an email I got from a Satansplain listener. Nicholli wrote to me to say he was “in a conversation with someone who asked what the difference is between humanism and Satanism. Nicholi says he answered from his perspective, but thought this might be worth being a subject for an episode of Satansplain.
I wrote back to Nicholli and pointed out, which I’m sure he already knew, that this is answered a little bit right in The Satanic Bible. The question is asked as to why not just call Satanism “humanism”. There are a couple of different reasons, but what The Satanic Bible points out right away is that Humanism is not a religion, whereas Satanism is a religion. Humanism is just a way of life or at best a philosophy.
So I thought that would be it, really. Nothing more to say. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there are more things to be said about this topic. In fact, what I just SAID may require a lot of unpack there, due to a lot of misconceptions that persist to this day regarding not only Satanism and humanism, but religion itself. For you long-time listeners of the show, some of what you’ll hear are things you already know, and things you’ve certainly heard ME say on the show before. But let’s go through the details, here.
