In the words of Anton LaVey, “If the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, then established occultists would do well as maze-makers.” Hear some Satanic thoughts on occultism of the past, including the 7 Hermetic Principles. Also the question of human origins and creation and how it relates (or rather, doesn’t relate) to Satanism.

Magister Bill M. here with Satansplain.
I received an email from a listener named Carl. Carl wrote to mention he is a Satanist, and shared some background of him finding The Satanic Bible and so on. One particular question he had was, “Is a Satanist living by the 7 points of Hermetic Law? I couldn’t find any real essay of them in any of LaVey’s books.”
So Carl is referring to a list known as the Seven Hermetic Principles. And I replied back to him with a short email, maybe about a paragraph. I told him that I would ultimately say no, these Seven Hermetic Principles are not Satanism and don’t have much of anything to do with Satanism. They relate to Hermeticism, and they had a big impact on beliefs you find in a lot of later occult and new-age circles, but I think calling Satanism “Hermetic” in that regard is too much of a stretch.
After I sent back that reply though, I got thinking, “OK, maybe this list is worth examining on the show, to see in detail where it does or doesn’t match up with Satanism”. So that’s something I’d like to do in this episode.
