“Let’s You And Him Fight!” say the onlookers who’d like to see Satanists spar with Christians for their public entertainment. Let’s not. We’ll be covering this, Satanists in Nigeria, the concept of I-Theism, and other topics in this episode of Satansplain.
---
Magister Bill M. here with Satansplain. Happy New Year. It is now the year 59 Anno Satanas. I know I’ve explained about a year ago what all that means. But since it’s a new year, I’ll explain it again for anybody new to the concept. In the practical, secular world we’ve all adopted the Gregorian calendar or Christian calendar, which says it’s the year 2024. But then you have other various calendars around the world. The Islamic calendar says it’s the year 1445, the Baha’i World Faith calendar says it’s the year 180, the Chinese calendar says it’s 4721, the Hebrew calendar says it’s 5784. (Which leads to the old American joke, “Hey, how did Jewish people live for a millennium without Chinese food?” But I digress.)
Well in Satanism we mark Anno Satanas, the year of Satan, with the founding of the Church of Satan. 1966 was year 1, so this brings us to the year 59 Anno Satanas. Note that although the Church of Satan was founded on Walpurgisnacht 1996, that is April 30th, the year number always changes with January 1st. And once again, 1966 was year one, not year zero.
If you want a quick way to figure out what year it is, Anno Satanis, and it’s a year in the 21st century, I just add 35 to the last two digits. So take the 24 from 2024, add 35 to 24, and that’s 59.
Speaking of the Church of Satan, some of you listeners may remember an episode I did a while back, on the accusation that the Church of Satan does NOTHING. That accusation was all addressed and debunked in Satansplain episode number 17. To this day though, I still run into idiots who make that accusation, and my response to them is, “OK, what do you think the Church of Satan should be DOING, that we’re not doing? Be specific. And before you answer, make sure the thing you’re proposing is not, one, something individual members are ALREADY free to DO if they so choose, and may already be doing -- for example, being a political activist for some cause or another. TWO, is not something that we’ve already TRIED and found not to work for us -- for example, the grotto system. And THREE isn’t something that would be contradictory to Satanism -- for example, indoctrinating children, or being ecumenical.” So again, I always ask these people who say we do NOTHING, what IS it, then, that you think we should be DOING. And the answer I always get back: Crickets. Silence.
Now the reason I bring this up is because I would like to read you a related essay, and interject some of my own thoughts along the way. This is an essay from Church of Satan High Priest, Magus Peter H. Gilmore. It’s an essay titled, “Let’s You And Him Fight”. It was written a significant number of years ago, I think, but coincidentally says a lot about the points I made. You can find this essay and many others, free for the reading, on Church of Satan dot com. Let us begin.

In recent years we’ve noted that some secularists think it is “clever” to use Satanism or even the NAME “Church of Satan” (or some variant thereof) as a means towards their political ends.
(And if I could pause here, I remember that around the time this essay was written, there was some joke group who tried calling themselves Church of Satan and trolled Christians, completely oblivious to the fact that there really IS a Church of Satan. Well, that group’s social media channel got shut down for fraud. New ones unfortunately pop up all the time, usually to try to scam people from Nigeria who think they’re joining the Illuminati, but that’s another story. Let’s continue with the essay.)
Their theory is that if Satanists demand the same irritating forms of public proselytizing as do certain Christian sects, then “people” will supposedly “wake up” and see how foolish the Christians are, and so end their irksome displays.
If only raising consciousness in the herd were so simple.
Some atheists seem quite pleased by such actions since they take the attitude that it is fun to watch self-proclaimed “Satanists” mud-wrestling with Christians in a vain attempt at self-promotion in [public] forums [and public spheres], which by all rights should maintain religious neutrality. Anton LaVey noted the title of the Popeye cartoon from 1934, “Let’s You and Him Fight,” in discussing this position: agitating a conflict but then stepping back to observe the fisticuffs between others that have been promoted. One then enjoys the brawl but remains free of injury—or any other responsibility, as the crowd probably didn’t catch the instigator’s overture but just gathered to watch when the actual fight broke out. The Satanist is supposed to be savvy to such tactics and should avoid being manipulated in this manner.
