Magister Bill M. here with Satansplain. It is October 2023. Halloween is fast approaching. About a week ago I made yet another appearance on Reaper’s Underground. The first time I was on there, I talked about Satanism. The second time I was on there, I shared some of the more amusing Tweet responses I was getting on Twitter; we turned it into a comedy hour. This THIRD time, I got to rant about my FAVORITE movie, which is Clive Barker’s “Nightbreed”. I’ll post the link for that on the usual channels. But yes, I did tie it back to Satanism, talking about what I believe some of the Satanically relevant points of the film are, and also reading an excerpt from an essay written by Church of Satan High Priest Peter H. Gilmore, which made it to a rare reprint of the original novel, Cabal. So, I had a lot of fun, talking about the movie, showing off my merchandise collection and all that.
But let’s get into the main content of today’s Satansplain episode.
Recently I got some messages from a few different people, all saying that they were questioned about the Church of Satan being legally recognized as a religious organization. Basically, as always, there are people out there with an axe to grind with the Church of Satan, trying to find any way to discredit the Church of Satan or Anton LaVey anyway they think they can, and a more recent fad it seems, is saying that because the Church of Satan is not recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt religion, this means it’s not legally recognized at all, and thus we’re not as legitimate as we could be, or as legitimate as some groups who claim to be Satanists who DO get tax exemption.
